How Do You Unlock All Five Ship Officers?

Ship officers are crew specialists who operate your vessel stations, provide deck dialogue, and grant tactical perks in naval combat. Adéwalé (Quartermaster)

Adéwalé is Edward Kenway's initial Quartermaster, joining automatically during Sequence 02. During The Treasure Fleet, Edward frees prisoners aboard a Spanish convoy and commandeers the Jackdaw. Adéwalé takes the helm beside Kenway, managing the crew and assisting with kenway's fleet logistics until late in the campaign.

Lucy Baldwin (Shipwright)

Lucy Baldwin is a captured naval carpenter held on a British prison ship at Salt Key Bank in southeast Dry Tortuga. After completing Sequence 04: This Old Cove, Adéwalé points Edward toward her location, initiating the quest A Proper Shipwright.

1. Board the prison vessel in Salt Key Bank, eliminate the guards, and release Lucy from her cell below deck.
2. Escape the area and destroy the pursuing British patrol vessels.
3. Travel to Great Inagua to start The One With the Gun, then sail to Black Island.
4. Eliminate the hostile patrol around Black Island, search the island manor for her grandfather's will, and speak to Lucy near the barn.

Recruiting Lucy permanently grants the Perfect Brace ability. Pressing the brace button right before incoming enemy fire or ramming impacts reduces incoming damage. Continuing her questline with Plantain! awards Baldwin's Golden Pistols, which feature 26 range and a 1.00 draw speed, while the final mission Big Wig in Havana leads to a buried chest.

Abel "Padre" Galvão (Master-at-Arms)

Abel Galvão is a reformed pirate living as a priest in Punta del Caracol, located southeast of Great Inagua. He becomes available directly after completing This Old Cove through the quest A Second Chance.

1. Travel to Punta del Caracol and speak with Padre to assist in organizing food supplies for the village.
2. Start the follow-up mission Loyalty, Discipline, and Courage by traveling west to Cumberland Bay.
3. Scout and clear Julien du Casse's remaining mercenaries stationed in the bay.
4. Return to Punta del Caracol to defend the settlement from raiders.

Padre joins your crew as Master-at-Arms and unlocks Ram Dash. This ability propels the Jackdaw forward in a burst of speed that inflicts heavy damage upon ramming opposing hulls. Completing his later quest The Other Cheek in Kingston rewards the Small Goblet, an item detailed among the best trinkets for increasing healing received from rations and remedies.

Anne Bonny (Quartermaster)

Anne Bonny is a veteran pirate who assumes the Quartermaster role at the end of Sequence 11: ...Everything Is Permitted. Following story developments in Kingston and Inagua, Adéwalé departs the crew to commit to the Assassin Brotherhood. Tobias "Deadman" Smith (Weaponmaster)

Tobias Smith is an eccentric master gunner encountered during the late-game storyline A World Without Gold. You unlock this arc at Great Inagua after finishing Sequence 11: ...Everything Is Permitted.

1. Accept That Bastard Maynard in Great Inagua to begin the eight-part story arc.
2. Track Lieutenant Robert Maynard's fleet to Eleuthera, then board the warship HMS Demolition during the quest What the Devil.
3. Inspect the cargo hold to find Smith locked inside a wooden crate, then transport him back to Great Inagua.
4. Complete the fourth mission, It's a Start, by consulting with your existing officers, testing crew strength in a tavern spar, and confirming Smith's appointment as Master Gunner.

This passive modification causes your broadside cannons to discharge a second consecutive salvo after a brief delay. Deadman's Cohort Mortar is an alternate firing pattern unlocked by completing Deadman's personal officer missions after recruiting him. After finishing the A World Without Gold campaign, speak with Tobias Smith on Great Inagua to trigger three bonus objectives: No Box Dark Enough, All Love Must End, and Very Little, But Something.

In Very Little, But Something, Edward tests experimental ammunition against British naval patrols. Installing this mechanism adds an alternate mortar targeting mode that blankets an area in carcass bombs. The Cohort Mortar drops with a two-second delay rather than four seconds, and moving the reticle while firing leaves an explosive barrage across the water, making it effective for hitting mobile sloops and frigates that outrun standard mortar shells.
